We have gained so much from our parents, grandparents and great grandparents why should we not remember them with divine worship?
Pitru Paksha or Pitri Paksha is a fortnight dedicated to our departed ancestors. We learnt of the teachings in Bhagwat Gita that our souls carry its Karma onto to the next birth since the soul never dies.
During meritorious this time, it is important to note that the Sun transitions from the northern to the southern hemisphere.
It is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata that Karna the 1st son of Queen Kunti and half-brother of the Pandavas died on the battle field of Kurukshetra, upon reaching Godhead it was noted that during his lifetime on earth he never made any reference or offerings of food to his ancestors Karna said that since he was unaware of his ancestors, he never donated anything in their memory.
To make amends, Karna was permitted to return to earth for a 15–day period, so that he could perform Shraddha and donate food and water in their memory. This period is now known as Pitru Paksha.
Shradh pooja and Tarpan are usually carried out in the presence of a priest, but this year, due to the pandemic, you must perform it at home and avoid gatherings.
